Celebrating non-Islamic festivals

All praise is due to Allah, the Beneficent and the Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Fear Allah! Servants of Allah, for everything we do will be accounted for, each soul is going to come to an end at a prescribed time, and you will be dealt with according to your deeds.

Allah has granted the Muslim nation no more than two religious festivals, as the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam confirmed while he was prohibiting the Ansaar (i.e., the residents of Madeenah) from celebrating the festivals which they used to celebrate during the pre-Islamic era:

“Allah has replaced them for you with two days which are better, the day of ‘Eed Al-Fitr and ‘Eed Al-Adh-haa” (Abu Daawood, Nasaa’i & Ahmad).

Anas Ibn Maalik, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “The Messenger of Allah sallAllahu ‘alaihi wasallam came (to Madeenah) and they had two days in which they would (relax and) play‘. He said, “What are these two days?” They said, ‘We used to play (on these two days) during the Jaahiliyyah.’ The Messenger of Allah sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Allah has given you something better instead of them: Yawm al-Duhaa (Eid al-Adha) and Yawm al-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr).” (Abu Daawood).

There are many evidences in Islam which prohibit Muslims from resembling disbelievers in general and warn against taking part in the celebration of their religious festivals in particular. Amongst the evidences which prohibit the resemblance of disbelievers are the followings:

·        In the hadith the prophet (SAW) saying “Every people has its festival, and this is our festival” implies exclusivity, that every people has its own festival, as Allah says (which means): “For every nation there is a direction to which they face (in their prayers)…” (Al-Baqarah: 148) and “… To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way…” (Al-Maa’idah:48).

This implies that each nation has its own ways. So if the Jews have a festival and the Christians have a festival, it is just for them, and we should not have any part in it, just as we do not share their qiblah (direction of prayer) or their laws.

·        Allah says that which means:

“Guide us to the straight path – The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favour, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.” (Al-Faatihah: 6-7).

·        Allah says that which means: “They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies…” (An-Nisaa’: 89).

·        The Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “He who imitates a people will be from among them (on the Day of Judgement).” (Abu Daawood & Ahmad).

The following texts specifically warn against joining the disbelievers in their religious festivals or celebrations:

·        Allah described His devout slaves with that which means: “And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood…” (Al-Furqaan: 72) Mujaahid, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: "This verse refers to any of the festivals of the infidels."

·         ‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “The one who builds (i.e., settles) in the lands of the infidels and participates in their (religious) festivals and resembles them until he dies, will be resurrected along with them on the Day of Resurrection.” (Bayhaqi).

The wisdom behind the prohibition of resembling infidels is that if a person resembles them in worldly issues, he will eventually incline towards them and feel love and loyalty towards them,  “one finds that people from the same occupation or profession feel more inclined towards one each another than they do to others." If this is the case for worldly resemblance, then for religious issues these feelings will certainly be stronger, and having such feelings and inclinations conflict with the belief of a Muslim.

There are many Islamic texts which command Muslims to differ from infidels in both religious and worldly matters; such as the following:

·        The Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “The Jews and Christians do not dye their grey hair, so differ from them (by doing so).” (Bukhaari & Muslim

·        The Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “Grow your beards, cut your moustaches (just short of shaving) and thereby differ from the Jews and the Christians.” (Bukhaari & Muslim).

·        The Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “Pray while wearing your shoes and thereby differ from the Jews who do not do so.” (Abu Daawood & Haakim).

Whoever celebrates these festivals is a sinner, whether he does it out of politeness or friendliness, or because he is too shy to refuse, or for whatever other reason, because it makes the Kuffaar feel proud of their religion.

‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Amr clearly stated: ‘Whoever lives in the land of the non-Arabs and celebrates their New Year and their festivals, and imitates them until he dies in that state, will be gathered with them on the Day of Resurrection.’

‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, refused to even acknowledge the name of their festivals which were exclusively theirs, so how about actually celebrating them?

أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله العظيم لي ولكم فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم

Congratulating them on their festivals

Congratulating the Kuffaar on their religious festivals is Haraam because it implies that one accepts or approves of their rituals of Kufr, even if one would not accept those things for oneself. Allah said which means, "If you disbelieve, then verily, Allah is not in need of you, He likes not disbelief for His slaves. And if you are grateful (by being believers), He is pleased therewith for you"  (Az-Zumar: 7(.

He also says:

اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم وأتممت عليكم نعمتي ورضيت لكم الإسلام دينًا [المائدة:3]

"This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion" (Al-Maa’idah: 3(.

So congratulating them is forbidden, whether they are one’s colleagues at work or otherwise.
If they greet us on their festivals, we should not respond, because these are not our festivals, and because they are not festivals which are acceptable to Allah. These festivals are innovations in their religions, and even those, which may have been prescribed formerly, have been abrogated by the religion of Islam, with which Allah sent Muhammad sallAllahu ‘alaihi wasallam to the whole of mankind.

Allah says which means: "Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers" (Aal ‘Imraan: 85(.

It is Haraam for a Muslim to accept invitations to such occasions, because this is worse than congratulating them, as it implies taking part in their celebrations.

Similarly, Muslims are forbidden to imitate the Kuffaar by having parties on such occasions, or exchanging gifts, or giving out sweets or food, or taking time off work, etc., because the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alaihi wasallam said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said, ‘Imitating them in some of their festivals implies that one is pleased with their false beliefs and practices, and gives them the hope that they may have the opportunity to humiliate and mislead the weak.

Whoever does anything of this sort is a sinner, whether he does it out of politeness or friendliness, or because he is too shy to refuse, or for whatever other reason, because this is hypocrisy in Islam, and because it makes the Kuffaar feel proud of their religion.

Allah is the One Whom we ask to make the Muslims feel proud of their religion, to help them adhere steadfastly to it, and to make them victorious over their enemies, for He is the Strong and Omnipotent.

French Senate passes ban on
full Muslim veils

PARIS – The French Senate on
Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a bill banning the burqa-style Islamic veil on
public streets and other places, a measure that affects less than 2,000 women
but that has been widely seen as a symbolic defense of French values.

General view of deputies in the
hemicycle during the vote to ban full-face veils worn by some Muslim women in
public at the National Assembly in Paris July 13, 2010. The French Senate on
Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a bill banning the burqa-style Islamic veil on
public streets and other places, making France the second European country to
take steps to make wearing the burqa or niqab a criminal offence. [Agencies]

The Senate voted 246 to 1 in
favor of the bill in a final step toward making the ban a law – though it
now must pass muster with France’s constitutional watchdog. The bill was
overwhelmingly passed in July in the lower house, the National Assembly.

Many Muslims believe the
legislation is one more blow to France’s No. 2 religion, and risks raising the
level of Islamophobia in a country where mosques, like synagogues, are sporadic
targets of hate. However, the law’s many proponents say it will preserve the
nation’s values, including its secular foundations and a notion of fraternity
that is contrary to those who hide their faces.

In an attempt to head off any
legal challenges over arguments it tramples on religious and other freedoms,
the leaders of both parliamentary houses said they had asked a special body to
ensure it passes constitutional muster. The Constitutional Council has one
month to rule.

To wear or not to wear burqa, asks France

The bill is worded to trip safely through legal minefields. For
instance, the words "women," "Muslim" and "veil"
are not even mentioned in any of its seven articles.

"This law was the object
of long and complex debates," the Senate president, Gerard Larcher, and
National Assembly head Bernard Accoyer said in a joint statement announcing
their move. They said they want to be certain there is "no
uncertainty" about its conforming to the constitution.

France would be the first
European country to pass such a law, though others, notably neighboring
Belgium, are considering laws against face-covering veils, seen as conflicting
with the local culture.

"Our duty concerning such
fundamental principles of our society is to speak with one voice," said
Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, opening a less than 5-hour-long debate
ahead of the vote.

The measure, carried by
President Nicolas Sarkozy’s conservative party, was passed by the lower house
of parliament, the National Assembly, on July 13.

It would outlaw face-covering
veils, including those worn by tourists from the Middle East, on public streets
and elsewhere. The bill set fines of euro150 ($185) or citizenship classes for
any woman caught covering her face, or both. It also carries stiff penalties for
anyone, such as husbands or brothers, convicted of forcing the veil on a woman.
The euro 30,000 ($38,400) fine and year in prison are doubled if the victim is
a minor.

The bill is aimed at ensuring
gender equality, women’s dignity and security, as well as upholding France’s
secular values – and its way of life.

Some women, like Kenza Drider,
have vowed to wear a full-face veil despite a law. Drider says she prefers to
flirt with arrest rather than bow to what she says is an injustice.

"It is a law that is
unlawful," said Drider, a mother of four from Avignon, in southern France.
"It is … against individual liberty, freedom of religion, liberty of
conscience," she said.

"I will continue to live
my life as I always have with my full veil," she told Associated Press
Television News.

Drider was the only woman who
wears a full-faced veil to be interviewed by a parliamentary panel that spent
six months deciding whether to move ahead with legislation.

Muslim leaders concur that
Islam does not require a woman to hide her face. However, they have voiced
concerns that a law forbidding them to do so would stigmatize the French Muslim
population, which at an estimated 5 million is the largest in western Europe.
Numerous Muslim women who wear the face-covering veil have said they are being
increasingly harassed in the streets.

However, the bill has its
Muslim defenders, like a women’s rights group active in heavily immigrant
neighborhoods.

"How can we allow the
burqa here and at the same time fight the Taliban and all the fundamentalist
groups across the world?" said the president of NPNS, Sihem Habchi.
"I’m Muslim and I can’t accept that because I’m a woman I have to
disappear," she told APTN.

Raphael Liogier, a sociology
professor who heads the Observatory of the Religious in Aix-en-Provence, says
that Muslims in France are already targeted by hate-mongers and the ban on
face-covering veils "will officialize Islamophobia."

"With the identity crisis
that France has today, the scapegoat is the Muslim," he told The
Associated Press.

Indeed, the justice minister
said that the French "ask about the future of their society, of their
nation" as they "see the internationalization of our society."

"The Senate must guarantee
the permanence of our values … which forge our identity," she said.

Ironically, instead of helping
some women integrate, the measure may keep them cloistered in their homes to
avoid exposing their faces in public.

"I won’t go out. I’ll send
people to shop for me. I’ll stay home, very simply," said Oum Al Khyr, who
wears a "niqab" that hides all but the eyes.

"I’ll spend my time
praying," said the single woman "over age 45" who lives in
Montreuil on Paris’ eastern edge. "I’ll exclude myself from society when I
wanted to live in it."

The law banning the veil would
take effect only after a six-month period designed to convince women to show
their faces.

The Interior Ministry estimates
the number of women who fully cover themselves at some 1,900, with a quarter of
them converts to Islam and two-thirds with French nationality.

The French parliament wasted no
time in working to get a ban in place, opening an inquiry shortly after the
French president said in June 2009 that full veils that hide the face are
"not welcome" in France.

It was unclear, however, how
police would enforce the law, from handing out fines to hunting down any men
who might force the veil on their wives and daughters.

"I will accept the fine
with great pleasure," said Drider, vowing to appeal to the European Court
of Human Rights in Strasbourg if she gets caught.

This story
begins when I was a child: I was born poor. Often we hadn’t enough to eat.
Whenever we had some food, Mother often gave me her portion of rice. While
she was transferring her rice into my bowl, she would say "Eat this
rice, son! I’m not hungry."

This was Mother’s First Lie.

As I grew, Mother gave up her
spare time to fish in a river near our house; she hoped that from the fish
she caught, she could give me a little bit more nutritious food for my
growth. Once she had caught just two fish, she would make fish soup. While I
was eating the soup, mother would sit beside me and eat the what was still
left on the bone of the fish I had eaten, My heart was touched when I saw it.
Once I gave the other fish to her on my chopstick but she immediately refused
it and said, "Eat this fish, son! I don’t really like fish."

This was Mother’s Second Lie.

Then, in order to fund my
education, Mother went to a Match Factory to bring home some used matchboxes,
which she filled with fresh matchsticks. This helped her get some money to
cover our needs. One wintry night I awoke to find Mother filling the
matchboxes by candlelight. So I said, "Mother, go to sleep; it’s late:
you can continue working tomorrow morning." Mother smiled and said
"Go to sleep, son! I’m not tired."

This was Mother’s Third Lie.

When I had to sit my Final
Examination, Mother accompanied me. After dawn, Mother waited for me for
hours in the heat of the sun. When the bell rang, I ran to meet her.. Mother
embraced me and poured me a glass of tea that she had prepared in a thermos.
The tea was not as strong as my Mother’s love, Seeing Mother covered with
perspiration, I at once gave her my glass and asked her to drink too. Mother
said "Drink, son! I’m not thirsty!".

This was Mother’s Fourth Lie.

After Father’s death, Mother had
to play the role of a single parent. She held on to her former job; she had
to fund our needs alone. Our family’s life was more complicated. We suffered
from starvation. Seeing our family’s condition worsening, my kind Uncle who
lived near my house came to help us solve our problems big and small. Our
other neighbors saw that we were poverty stricken so they often advised my
mother to marry again. But Mother refused to remarry saying "I don’t
need love."

This was Mother’s Fifth Lie.

After I had finished my studies
and gotten a job, it was time for my old Mother to retire but she carried on
going to the market every morning just to sell a few vegetables. I kept
sending her money but she was steadfast and even sent the money back to me.
She said, "I have enough money."

That was Mother’s Sixth Lie.

I continued my part-time studies
for my Master’s Degree. Funded by the American Corporation for which I
worked, I succeeded in my studies. With a big jump in my salary, I decided to
bring Mother to enjoy life in America but Mother didn’t want to bother her
son; she said to me "I’m not used to high living."

That was Mother’s Seventh Lie.

In her dotage, Mother was attacked
by cancer and had to be hospitalized. Now living far across the ocean, I went
home to visit Mother who was bedridden after an operation. Mother tried to
smile but I was heartbroken because she was so thin and feeble but Mother
said, "Don’t cry, son! I’m not in pain."

That was Mother’s Eighth Lie.

Telling me this, her eighth
lie, she died. YES, MOTHER WAS AN ANGEL!
M – O – T – H – E – R

"M" is for the Million things she gave me,

"O" means Only that she’s growing old,

"T" is for the Tears she shed to save me,

"H" is for her Heart of gold,

"E" is for her Eyes with love-light shining
in them,

"R" means Right, and right she’ll always be.

Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER" a word that means the world to me.

For those of you who are lucky to be still blessed with your Mom’s presence
on Earth, this story is beautiful. For those who aren’t so blessed, this is
even more beautiful.

Best Regards :

Shahid
